What is Periodontics?
Periodontics is a dental specialty that focuses on the supporting structure for teeth, diseases around teeth, and conditions of teeth. Tissues around the gums are known as periodontium which includes gums, known as gingiva, alveolar bone, which includes the teeth, sockets that hold the teeth. The actual surface of the tooth is known as cementum and the ligament that attaches the tooth to the alveolar bone is known as periodontal fiber. Periodontists are dentists that specialize in the study of periodontics and specifically the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease.
When visiting Beverly Hills Dental Center, we will analyze a patient’s overall oral health. Adults over 35 years of age are particularly susceptible to periodontal disease. Certain activities such as smoking increase the odds of developing symptoms including: tooth loss and advanced cases may require bone grafting. Periodontal disease can progress steadily and prevention is the first line of defense against most cases, however, once the process begins Periodontists will focus on stopping the further decay and treating the specific stage of periodontal disease.
In more serious cases the bone that holds your teeth in place, the aforementioned Alveolar Bone will begin to be affected. From gingivitis to the gradual decay of the gums to loosen teeth, actual bone decay is called Periodontitis. If left untreated, eventual complete loss of teeth will be the result a very serious and costly intervention will be necessary. Unlike other diseases, Periodontitis can be painless and therefore progress with the patient being unaware. As high as 70% of late stage patients may be completely unaware that they are experiencing it. That’s why at Beverly Hills Dentistry, we believe in examining our new patients and assessing their overall oral health as soon as possible.
The key to good oral health is prevention, and it begins with simple and straightforward things like checkups, periodontal examinations, consistent oral hygiene and education. At Beverly Hills Dental Care, we look forward to being your key ally in combating tooth decay and maintaining your healthy smile for a long time to come.
