What is a full mouth reconstruction?
A full mouth reconstruction is a procedure that aims to address multiple structures within the mouth. The human mouth is composed of: hard and soft tissues, connective tissues, blood vessels, and nerves. All of these structures need to be in perfect health for a person’s mouth to function properly. When they don’t work together, a full mouth reconstruction may be necessary.
- Damaged, fractured, or broken teeth
- Missing teeth from decay or trauma
- Teeth, corroded by acid erosion
- Jaw, muscle and headache pain
Our dentist, Dr. Eshaghian, will create a treatment plan customized for your unique case. Each full mouth reconstruction is a bit different. Generally, they involve multiple procedures necessary to rebuild upper and lower jaw functionality. They can also be employed to restore teeth in the upper or lower jaw. On occasion, the surgeries can address jaw and tooth functionality.
Each reconstruction differs, but most cover the following areas:
Teeth: Restoring a person’s teeth is a dentist’s primary focus. Restorations can include: veneers, crowns, dental implants, inlays and onlays, crowns etc. Depending on the condition of each tooth, different restorations are prescribed.
Gums: The gums are the anchor point for teeth. Not only do they provide a structural base, they serve to protect and nourish your teeth’s health. Over time, pockets between the gum and teeth begin to develop. The deeper these pockets are, the more likely bacteria are to infect them. Scaling and root planing is a technique that treats these pockets and restores them to health. In severe cases, soft and hard tissues grafts may be necessary to restore the gums.
Jaw: During a full mouth reconstruction, Dr. Eshagian will check your jaw for TMD. TMD is a disorder caused by problems with a patient’s bite. Depending on the severity of a person’s disorder the treatment during a reconstruction can either be joint therapy or oral surgery.
